Lady waiting for dental check up at CS Family DentistryHaving a healthy, bright smile doesn’t just happen by accident. Like many good and worthwhile things in life, you have to work hard and maintain a routine. Oral health is a revealed truth we’ve heard our entire lives—routine oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and biannual dental cleanings and checkups with your Bastrop dentist.

Dr. Cole Smith and his experienced dental team know that you have a choice when it comes to choosing the right dentist for you and your family. At CS Family Dentistry, we believe that patient education is integral for a strong dedication to oral hygiene; our patients must make their own informed decisions about their dental health and procedures.

As a family dentist, Dr. Smith offers a broad range of dental treatments for families in and around Bastrop, TX. Instead of driving around to different dental offices for various family members, we offer family dental services in one convenient location. While your child is getting a digital x-ray and dental cleaning, you can treat yourself to a professional teeth whitening to jazz up your smile. Whatever your dental needs, our staff is here to take care of you.

What Is General Dentistry?

General dentistry refers to the variety of dental procedures that keep your teeth, gums, tissue, bone, and nearby structures at their optimal state. From digital x-rays to see underneath the surface, to fluoride treatments to strengthen teeth, sealant treatments to prevent cavities, and even tooth extractions to save surrounding teeth.

If you have any oral issues that could present future dental problems, Dr. Smith provides all the dental treatments you could need. Even dental emergencies are treated at CS Family Dentistry, call us for same-day appointments.

Why Are Regular Dental Visits Important?

Just because you aren’t having any dental issues doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make regular dental visits. We recommend a dental exam and checkup every six months for the following reasons:

Professional Teeth Cleaning

Regular brushing isn’t enough to remove the plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. When you visit us for a routine exam and cleaning, we’ll professionally clean your teeth. A professional cleaning twice a year can help you maintain your oral health.

Oral Health Education

When you visit our dental office for a routine checkup, we can educate you and your children on keeping your teeth and gums healthy. We offer tips on brushing, flossing, and dietary choices. Our goal is to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime.

Oral Health Assessment

During your dental checkup, we’ll evaluate your teeth and gums and look for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, or other dental concerns. If we see a problem, we can form a treatment plan to avoid further issues.

Preventive Dentistry in Bastrop, TX

Preventive dentistry falls right under general and family dentistry. Essentially, it’s the practice of preventing issues that hinder your oral health, such as:

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Gingivitis
  • Enamel wear and tear
  • Periodontitis

Preventive dentistry comes in many forms and starts with basic oral hygiene like brushing and dental exams. In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you visit your local dentist at intervals determined by your Bastrop dentist. Some people may need to schedule more dental visits, especially when treating gum disease. Getting the oral health you need starts with the following foundational building blocks:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss every day
  • Schedule dental cleanings and exams twice a year
  • Eat a nutritious diet

Tooth-Colored FillingsFamily shows off their teeth after professional whitening at CS Family Dentistry

In the past, patients didn't have a lot of options when it came to fillings. For over 100 years, amalgam fillings were the go-to, but even with proper care, many would end up looking dark and noticeable. Our patients today can request tooth-colored fillings that blend with your natural teeth and don't stand out. White fillings, also known as composite fillings, restore the look of your tooth and blend in with your enamel.

Most patients only need one dental visit to have a tooth prepared and restored with a tooth-colored filling. Since the white filling can bond to the tooth, Dr. Smith doesn't have to remove as much of the healthy part of the tooth to bond it. The process is simple; once any tooth decay is removed, Dr. Smith applies an adhesive along with several layers of the tooth-colored filling. Once it is in place and shaped, a special UV light helps cure and harden it.

We Look Forward to Hearing from You!

General Dentistry Technology

Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are used to help us diagnose dental issues that aren't noticeable during a visual examination. X-rays allow us to make accurate and precise diagnostics.

  • Tooth decay, especially decay that's not immediately visible—under a filling or in the spaces between teeth
  • Gum disease and bone loss
  • Abscesses
  • Tumors
  • Abnormalities in a root canal

While your dentist may be able to catch oral problems with a regular dental examination, x-rays can detect small issues before they become big. Dr. Cole Smith can also use x-rays to help place dental implants and other dental prosthetics.
