What You Should Know About Root Canals

Most people experience stress and anxiety when they hear “root canal.” At CS Family Dentistry, we understand why; historically, root canals were often painful and scary.

The good news is that’s a part of the past. Modern equipment and techniques have recreated the root canal process into a simple and painless procedure. In fact, root canals eliminate the pain you feel before the procedure while saving an infected tooth. Dr. Cole Smith has invested in dental technology that makes the process efficient and comfortable.

Extraction Aftercare Tips

After your dental extraction, follow these tips to help you heal quickly and avoid complications:

Take Medications

For mild discomfort, take either ibuprofen or Tylenol. If your dentist prescribes any other medication, take it as directed.

Rinse with Salt Water

After 24 hours, rinse with warm salt water three times a day. This will keep your mouth clean and encourage healing.

Use Ice Packs

For the first 48 hours, apply ice packs to your face at 20-minute intervals. This will reduce swelling and numb the area.

Eat Soft Foods

For the first week after an extraction, chew on the opposite side of your mouth and eat softer foods such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, and pasta.

Who Needs a Root Canal?

Dr. Cole Smith might recommend root canal therapy if you have an infection in the interior of your tooth. An infected tooth can be very painful; which might be why people still associate root canals with extreme pain! The truth is, root canals end your suffering and allow you to relax again.

If you have tooth pain but are afraid of contacting your Bastrop dentist, please keep in mind that, unlike a headache, a tooth infection will not go away on its own. It can even spread to other teeth. Without treatment, you will continue to suffer from tooth pain and may lose your tooth. Dr. Smith will always do everything he can to preserve your tooth before extracting and restoring it. Your root canal therapy will help maintain bone growth and root support while getting rid of infection and pain.

Tooth Extractions

Our Bastrop dental office offers a variety of preventative dental services to keep and preserve good oral health, along with tooth restorations that protect and restore weakened teeth.

We try to save and treat an infected or damaged tooth; however, we may recommend a tooth extraction to protect your oral health as a last resort. Our priority is your health, which is why we always start with prevention, oral maintenance, and root canal therapy before we consider extraction.

Why We Recommend Tooth Extraction

There are some cases where tooth extraction is the healthiest alternative, such as:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Semi-impacted teeth
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Denture placement

We understand how challenging the procedure can be for even the most easygoing patients. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation to keep our patients calm and relaxed. With a highly experienced dentist like Dr. Cole Smith and his team of attentive and compassionate dental professionals, tooth extraction does not need to be stressful

Dental Extractions and Root Canal Therapy Technology

Rotary Endodontics

Rotary endodontics allows us to perform gentle root canals with a high success rate. During a root canal, the special material of the nickel-titanium instrument allows better and faster movement, while the instrument itself enables Dr. Smith to access hard-to-reach places in your mouth. Thanks to rotary endodontics, we can remove the infection from your tooth and ensure that reinfection will not occur.
